5 Steps to Stay Motivated with Purpose

In the last post, we encouraged you to discover your Why, your reason for going into business in the first place, and offered tips and the questions to ask to define yours.

At this point, you’re probably all amped up on fulfilling your Why. You’re eating, sleeping and drinking your Why. You may have an image that represents your Why on your phone, next to the bathroom mirror, your laptop desktop image, or maybe even a small image in your purse or wallet.

Your Why is all you see! You’re bursting with energy and eager to get things done.

But, what happens a month or two down the road, when life has become busy – the holidays are around the corner after all – and you’re not as focused on your Why?

Sure, it’s there somewhere, but you’re not thinking about it every day; or at least not as much as you did when you first discovered it.

Before you know it, it slips to the back of your mind, where it lives with thoughts like “Why did I come in this room?” and “What did I need to get at the store that didn’t write down that I was sure I’d remember?”

It’s natural for motivation to fizzle out over time. How tiring would it be to always be super motivated all the time? That’s not a normal state for anyone and just leads to burnout.

However, remembering your Why will inject you with just enough motivation to stay focused on doing the tasks you need to do in order to keep business hopping.

Get Motivated in 5 steps

Step 1: Prioritize your Why.

Often we lose motivation when we allow our Why to take a back seat to everything else in our lives.

If you keep pushing it off, your Why will end up grasping desperately to the bumper as you speed down the carpool lane of life.

It’s hard to make your Why a priority when life gets busy and everyone is on you to make their needs your sole priority.

But remember, when you achieve your Why, everyone will benefit. So make your Why-related activities your top priority every day.

After all, it’s less than an hour of your time. Sharpie these activities into your calendar every day and show your Why you mean business.

Step 2: Keep your eyes on the prize.

Post your Why statement where you can see it. If you’re a visual person, find a photo of your Why, such as a dream house, your children, or your dream vacation destination and post it where you can see it. Having a visual reminder will definitely keep you motivated.

If you’re saying, ”I’ve done that and I’m still losing touch with my Why. What can I do?” the answer is simple: Get a new photo.

You’ve likely become so used to that one image that you just don’t see it anymore. Replace it with a new photo and it’ll catch your attention.

Another idea is to follow Why-related pages on Instagram. There’s no shame: you probably spend more time than you’d like to admit scrolling through carefully curated aspirational content.

We all do it; you’re definitely not alone there.

Follow Why-related pages and you’ll reconnect with it as you scroll. For example, if your Why is a dream house, follow home design pages or the page of your agent.

If your Why is a month in Iceland, follow the tourism pages for Iceland.

Then you can connect the envy that’s aroused with your Why and that will give you the motivation to keep on keeping on.

Step 3: Review.

Find a quiet spot in the home. Don’t laugh; there has to be one somewhere, even if it’s just a small nook where you can hide for a few minutes.

Reviewing takes focus; you have to be able to process the information you’re getting and understand how it relates to how you’re feeling now.

Here are two things to review:

Your progress.

It’s tough to see the overall picture when you’re focused on what’s just at the end of your nose. If you want a quick surge of motivation, review your progress over time, whether it’s over the last month or the last six months. Teamzy makes it easy to review your progress over time.

Your answers to your Why questions

Remember those questions from the last blog? Review your answers will put you in the same mindset you had when you answered them in the first place, and that just may give you a turbo-boost of motivation.

√ Why did you become a distributor?

√ What do you hope to accomplish?

√ Why is that important to you?

Why would achieving this mean for you and your family?

√ Why is that meaningful? How does this make you feel?

Reviewing provides perspective, especially when you’re tempted to throw it all away and quit. Instead of quitting, take a short timeout to check-in with yourself and your intentions and reconnect with your Why.

Step 4: Have a mantra.

A mantra is a word or phrase that gets you pumped up. Ideally, it’ll relate to your Why, but it could just be a quote or phrase that evokes that emotional reaction of “Yes, I can do this!” It may even be “Yes, I can do this!” Here other mantras to use if you don’t have one already.

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”  – Arthur Ashe

“Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.”  – Sam Levenson

“You simply have to put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Put blinders on and plow right ahead.”  – George Lucas

“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.”  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Do not wait to strike ‘til the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.”  -William Butler Yeats

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”  – Vince Lombardi

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”  – Milton Berle

“Don’t let the fear of striking out hold you back.”  – Babe Ruth

“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.”  – Jim Rohn .

So, what quote or phrase will you use?  Once you decide, write it down and place it where you’re sure to see it daily. Most importantly, say it out loud. Sure, you may feel silly, but saying it aloud will push it to the forefront of your mind and inspire you to ACT.

Step 5: Tap into your passion.

When you’re passionate about your product, it may be easier to stay motivated than if you just feel “eh” about it.

“Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously invested in it.”

Julia Child

Chances are, you didn’t become a distributor because your reaction to your product was just “eh” or “It’s okay” or “I’m sure it likely does the job.” No way! You were probably singing the product’s praises from the rooftops, telling everyone within earshot about how great it is.

You probably recommended it to your mom, sister, friends, the parents at your child’s playgroup, everyone in your book club, the lady behind you in line at Target and the cashier… pretty much everyone you may have come in contact with. You wanted to share the great results you were seeing.

When the opportunity arose for you to become a distributor, you did. You may have jumped at the chance or carefully weighed it before committing, but either way, you made the jump. You’re still singing the products’ praises from the mountaintops; it’s just that now you’re making money while doing it.

For some people, making money may be the problem. It sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

However, in some cases, making money from our passions throws a bit of water on those passions. It happens more often than you may think.

It could be that the pressure of selling takes the fun out of it; like now all of a sudden, you have sales numbers to meet and those praises you gave so freely before are now connected to your income. Maybe the time spent on the business is cutting into the fun parts of running in the business – who enjoys creating spreadsheets and profit/loss statements?

Your Why Is The Bridge Between Your Passion and Your Business.

Reconnecting with your Why will help you increase your motivation to do all the things you need to in order to create a thriving business; one that fulfills you and allows you to help others. What’s better than that?

Don’t lose sight of your motivation to succeed; don’t lose sight of your reason for succeeding. Stay connected to your Why and prioritize it in your daily life, and you can be sure you’ll reach the goals you’ve set for your business.

Before you know it, you’ll have achieved what you set out to, and you’ll be happy that you didn’t quit along the way.

In fact, many people quit when they’re oh so close to succeeding – isn’t that a kicker? They should’ve reconnected with their Why. Avoid burnout, resist the urge to quit and get motivated by living your Why.
