Goal Setting: Set Goals You’ll Want to Achieve Next Year

Goal Setting: Set Goals You’ll Want to Achieve Next Year

Last week we talked about getting a head start on achieving your goals. You may have even begun thinking about the goals you would like to achieve in the coming year. This week, we will focus more on setting goals that you are excited to achieve in the year ahead. After all, it’s much easier to achieve goals if you are excited about achieving them in the first place. So many people, not just network marketers, but everybody, struggle with setting and keeping goals. Often, we set goals in January; however, by February or March, we’ve completely forgotten about them.

For example, think about a fitness school that you may have set up in the past. If you’re like most people, you probably went to the gym religiously in January, but by February you probably went less often. And, by summer, you probably weren’t going at all. It’s not just fitness goals, it’s our other goals as well. This week will help you set goals that you are excited to achieve, that will help drive your business forward, and will help you grow as both a network marketer and as a person.

How to set goals you’re excited to achieve

The key to setting goals you’re excited to achieve is figuring out what drives you in your business. We call this your why. As in why did you get into business in the first place? What drives you to continue to do your Power Hours each and every day? This is central to your business because it’s the reason you do what you do every day. It also provides the motivation that you need when it becomes so hard to achieve your goals. When you feel your motivation beginning to wane in the spring, your why will help you rekindle that motivation and make you more excited to get back on track to achieving your goals.

When setting your goals for 2023, keep your why in mind. It should be central to the goals that you create not only this year but in the years ahead. What is something that you would like to achieve in 2023? It could be an extension of a goal that you had set this year. For example, if you increase business by 20% this year, you may want to make a more ambitious goal for the year ahead, such as increasing business by 30%. Then, once you’ve set the goal, you can create a plan that will help you achieve it. If it’s an extension of a goal that you had set and achieved this year, then you may wish to do what you did in the year ahead as well.

Goal setting isn’t just for your business.

When you begin achieving goals in one area of your life, it’s much easier to achieve them in all areas of your life as well. What goals do you wish to set in your personal life that will help you grow both personally and professionally? While you’re setting goals for your business, be sure to also begin thinking about goals you like to set in other areas of your life as well. The motivation you feel when you’re achieving goals in your personal life may even spill over into the goals for your business and vice versa.

Tips for goal setting

  1. Set the stage. When you’re beginning the goal-setting process, be sure to find a place in your home that is quiet and distraction-free. This allows you to focus clearly on setting the goals that you want to achieve in the year ahead. It also gives you the space to think about what you can improve in your business and your personal life as well. During this time, let your family and friends know not to distract you for the 30 minutes to an hour or so that it may take to create your goals for the year ahead. Also, it helps to silence your phone or place it in another room so that you’re not tempted to distract yourself from the task at hand. After all, it’s really easy to spend your time scrolling on your phone instead of focusing on your business.
  2. Brainstorm. Although brainstorming sessions usually involve more than one person, it is something that you can do on your own as well. Take out a piece of paper and a pen and just start writing. Begin to answer these questions:
  • What do you want to achieve in the year ahead?
  • Thinking of the past, what worked this year when you were on your journey to achieving your goals?
  • What would you do differently this year that you didn’t do last year?
  • Is there an area in which you wish to grow your business?
  • Did you create goals that were too ambitious last year?
  • Were the goals you set last year too easy?

These questions will help you get started and allow you to think about what you wish to achieve in the year ahead.

  1. Ask for advice. If you’re stuck and aren’t sure what goals to set for the year ahead, you can ask others around you. Start with your spouse or partner and get there in sight of the goals You may wish to set in the year ahead. Also, reach out to your team and consider brainstorming ideas together. If you are stuck setting goals for the year ahead, your team may be in the same situation. By putting your heads together, you may be able to come up with some great goals that you are all excited to achieve in 2023. If you have a coach or mentor, which is strongly recommended if you wish to reach the highest echelons of success, then be sure to reach out to them to see what they think. Your coach may have unique insight into your business and we’ll be able to see where you need to improve and offer ideas to help you in the year ahead. Additionally, your mentor has likely been in your shoes before and may be able to offer insight to help you create goals that will help you get where you want to be.

Staying motivated

Once you’ve set your goals, it’s very easy to put them aside and forget about them. In fact, this is what many people do. They set goals that they’re excited to achieve at first; however, once they start working towards them it’s very easy to get sidetracked. Life happens. Distractions keep us from working toward the goals we have set. Sometimes it’s easier to do something else than to work toward our goals. And, over time our motivation will naturally begin to wane. That’s why it’s very important to keep your motivation high as you’re working toward your goals.

  1. Keep your goals where you can see them. Whether you write them down on a sticky note and paste them to your mirror. You’ll see them every morning while you’re brushing your teeth. Or you type them into the sticky notes program on your computer so that you see them every time you open your laptop it’s important to see the goals you’ve set. This will help them stay top of mind so that you don’t forget them after a few weeks’ time.
  2. Review your goals. We recommend reviewing your goals on a regular basis. Now the term regular varies by person. Some people review their goals every week. Other people review them once a month or even once a quarter. The important part is that you look over your goals, read them, absorb them, and figure out if you are on track to achieving them within the time period that you have set. This allows you to see if your goals are reasonable and help you see any problem areas ahead. By reviewing your goals regularly, you have less of a chance of falling off track. You’ll be able to spot the dangers ahead of time. This allows you to take the steps to avoid falling off track and continue on your path.
  3. Share your goals with others. Once you’ve set your goals, be sure to share them with other people, whether it is your team, your coach, your mentor, your spouse, or other family members. Sharing your goals creates accountability. This accountability pressures you into achieving your goals within the time frame that you have set for yourself. After all, these folks are the ones who are going to be asking about your progress. This not only reminds you that you’ve set goals to achieve, but it may also rekindle your motivation. As humans, we are social creatures and we don’t like to let other people down. This can keep us motivated in the pursuit of the goals we’ve set.
