Why People Respect Consistency and How to Leverage it to Build Your Business

As a Beachbody Coach, you’ve probably had countless people tell you how inspiring you are to them. Have you ever wondered what it is about you that is inspiring? Is it the 50-pound weight-loss goal you achieved? The new car you paid for with cash? Fabulous vacations? No way!

People aren’t inspired by achievement. At least not for long. If we were, we wouldn’t have created the derisive term “one-hit wonder” to describe people who have achieved a major success (once).

People are inspired by consistency.

Dr. Robert Cialdini, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, affirms that “People respect consistency and desire it for themselves.” In fact, Cialdini argues that many prominent psychologists consider the desire to be consistent as a “primary motivator” for all people.

Wow. Consider that for a moment. A primary motivator for human behavior is the desire to be (and look) consistent. This explains a lot about why people succeed and fail—they are staying consistent with new healthy habits or unable to stop being consistent with their bad habits. As a coach we can use this information to create systems to help our customers succeed—AND we can harness our own ability to be consistent to attract a steady stream of new prospects to our businesses.

That’s right, your consistency will attract people to your business. But you already know this, don’t you? You are a “product of the product,” right? Consistently exercising, drinking your shakes, investing in personal development, posting on social media, etc.? If you’re doing all this, and your business isn’t where you want it to be, then what’s missing?

What’s missing is TRUST. Attract people all day long. Heck, attract thousands of them. None of them will do business with you until you earn their trust. But there’s good news: trust CAN be earned. How you ask?

Trust is earned through your communication and follow up.

You may be the most disciplined person on earth in your personal habits—your fitness, health, content strategy—but you’ll convert many more leads and build your business much faster if your communication and follow up are consistent, too. You have to build relationships to build trust and you can only build relationships one way:

Investing time and connecting with people is the only way to build and deepen relationships.

You’ve heard it said that sales are a contact sport. It is; you have to be in consistent contact with people to earn their trust so that they will do business with you.

The big secret revealed: Stay in contact with all your relationships, old and new, consistently! Follow up 7-10 times on every invite, AND, make sure NOBODY EVER FALLS THROUGH THE CRACKS.

Easy right? It’s definitely not easy, but it is do-able—if you have a SYSTEM.
