Reconnect with Your Why & Meet Your 2019 Network Marketing Goals
It’s already the middle of 2019; are you on track to reaching your goals this year? If you said yes, that’s great! Keep doing what you’re doing to keep it up!
However, if you’re like many people, June may have snuck up on you, especially if you’re busy with life. So many of us come out the gate with a bang, which then turns to a fizzle a few months into the year. This can cause so many of us to just give up on our goals. However, no matter how busy you are with your business, your family, and your other commitments, that’s no reason to push aside your network marketing goals. The good news is, if you’ve fallen off course, now is the perfect time to get back on track. I mean, there’s no time like the present, right?
What’s the secret to getting – and staying – on track?
What’s your Why?
Your Why – or your purpose – is a powerful motivational tool for success. It allows you to focus on what’s important so you can cut through the static. What’s the static? It’s those every day distractions that vie for your attention and try to coax you away from your network marketing goals. If you’ve fallen off track once or twice this year already, it’s likely because the noise of the static has become so overwhelming that you can’t help but follow it. There’s no shame in that – it happens to all of us at one time or another. And, it’s the reason we may set the same goals over and over and don’t achieve them. It’s the reason we quit, even when we know in our heart of hearts that we shouldn’t.
Why it matters?
Although you may not have realized it, your Why has been with your since the beginning of your business. In fact, it likely helped you make the decision to take a chance on network marketing. It’s the biggest question we ask ourselves in our businesses and often Why we decided to start a business in the first place. It’s Why we strive to help others each and every day. It’s Why we continue to serve our networks, for the good of ourselves, our goals, and our families.
Although knowing your Why isn’t required to start your business, it’s important to help it last. It’s what brings you to your laptop, smartphone or computer each day to do the activities that drive your business. Put another way, a lack of Why or purpose is often the reason you feel so unfulfilled in a day job. Many of us started in network marketing because deep-down we were trying to find purpose in our work, and we may not have found it in our 9-5. Or, maybe we used to find purpose in our corporate jobs, but something changed: in the business or even in ourselves. Network marketing may have started as a side hustle to help us earn a bit more money each month. However, over time, we may have discovered how much we loved helping people. And, it may have helped us discover our Why.
Why = Freedom
A Why does more than help us focus to reach our goals. It helps us tap into the freedom to live the lives we had always dreamed of. Understanding our Why gives us the freedom of time to spend with our family and friends as well as working on our hobbies and passions. It gives us the freedom to feel more secure in our finances as we earn more money by doing what we love – helping people. It gives us the freedom to live by our personal values so that when we place our heads on our pillows each night, we feel secure in our actions.
Why: Because willpower sucks
What’s the biggest excuse people make when they don’t achieve their goals? (Other than, “I’m just too busy”) They often say, “I just don’t have the willpower.” In effect, they quit before they even get started. What’s happening here? They’re equating willpower with motivation. The two are not the same thing – willpower is definitely not the same thing as motivation. What is the same? Why-power. In order to achieve your goals, your Why has to be greater than the obstacles you’ll face. When these challenges and obstacles arise – and they will – your Why is what gives you the power to keep going forward. It pushes back against the easy excuses so you can do the activities that will help you reach your goals.
What is your Why?
If you’ve been a member of Teamzy for a while, you’ve likely figured out your Why. If you’re new or you’re interested in recommitting to the relationship marketing system, you may wonder what it is. Rest assured that you already know what it is deep in your heart; all you need to do is tease it out. Here’s how to find out:
- Why did you choose to become a distributor for your company?
- How have the products changed your life? (e.g., have you had dramatic results from using them? If your life has changed because of your products, your story may inspire others.)
- What is the ultimate goal of your business? That is, did you start it so you can make some extra money on the side or do you wish to turn it into a large-scale operation?
- What does achieving your goals mean for you and your family? It often helps to visualize the life you want to lead to help you assess how your goals can help you get there.
- Why is this meaningful? This is a deeply personal question; one that will get to the core of your purpose.
Pro Tip: Answer all of these questions honestly and you can help narrow down your overall Why statement.
Using your Why to achieve your goals
Once you’ve nailed down your Why, it’s time to incorporate it into your day. If you’ve had trouble committing to your goals or staying on track, your Why will keep you motivated to stay on track. How? Whenever you’re tempted to skip your daily business activities or not follow up with prospects, just think of your Why. It’ll not only help you understand the reason for doing these activities, but it’ll also give you that surge of motivation you need to get them done.
Although the view from Mount Success is amazing, the hike to get there is often a long, slow slog. Sure, it has some beautiful vistas along the way. However, for most of the journey, you’re often just looking at the path in front of you. Your Why is the promise of the panoramic view at the top.
Practical steps for using your Why
Include it in your day. Refer to your Why each and every day to ensure you stay on track. Say it out loud, if you can to make it part of your mindset.
Keep your Why statement nearby. Whether you write it on a sticky note that you adhere to a mirror or your computer or you have a framed photo representation on the wall, keep it where you can see it. When you’re feeling unmotivated or just need a little pick-me-up, look at it. Then, think about how it’s helped you achieve your goals so far. Think of what your life would be like without it. This is powerful motivation to keep you on track.
Include your Why in every decision you make. When you know what your priorities are, your decisions are easier to make. If it conforms to or complements your Why, it’s a good idea; if not, then no. This is so true when it comes to the big decisions you have to make in your business and in life. Review your options and assess which one conforms most to your Why statement. That’s the right decision to make. And, it’s one that won’t force you to choose between the most important things in your life and something else (that isn’t as important).
