Goals: Set Goals You Want to Achieve Next Year

It’s that time of year again; it’s time to think about what you want to achieve in the year ahead and beyond. This is a popular time to begin to craft your goals for next year. This is the time of year when your business may be slowing down slightly. Of course, you’re meeting with more people, including family and friends, during this socially busy time of year. You may take a much-needed break from your business to think about the future and what you want your business to look like next year.

Goals are the targets that you set to help you grow your business and achieve success. While many people think they need to set any old goal, it’s important to set goals that you are excited to achieve and that are in line with your values and your Why. But what does this mean? It means we need to put a lot of thought into our goals before we set them. Many of us know we need to set targets so we set ones that we think we should achieve. Often they don’t align with our Why. As a result, they’re easier to forget a few months into the year. If you want to achieve your goals, you have to set ones that align with what you truly want to achieve. Today we will take you through how to set goals and offer tips to help you achieve them.

Set SMART goals

If you want to achieve your goals make them SMART. This is a goal-setting system to help you set goals that are in keeping with your intentions. One of the biggest hurdles that many face when achieving their goals is that they set ones that are out of their reach or don’t align with their values. SMART goals help to overcome this. They force you to truly think about what you want to achieve, when, and if it’s tenable.

Specific

Specific goals are detailed. Be as specific as possible.  Don’t just say you want to boost sales or your network – say you want to increase sales (or your network)  by 10% each quarter.

Measurable

Metrics help you track your progress. In business, you have to know your numbers and keep track of your progress. Setting measurable goals gives you a clear picture of where you stand in regard to your progress and help you stay accountable.

Accountable

It’s hard to achieve your goals on your own. It’s easier when there’s someone to hold your feet to the fire. Find someone who can help you stay on track: a coach, a friend, or someone on your team. The important part is to have someone to help you stay committed to your goals.

Realistic

Set goals that coincide with your ability in regard to knowledge, time, and resources. Of course, your goals should be ambitious, but make sure they’re achievable as well. For example, you may want to quadruple your sales, but if it was difficult to do so this year, this may not be a realistic goal. There’s nothing stopping you from making it a long-range goal. But this year, focus on a more realistic number, say 10% or so.

Time-based

Every goal should have a deadline. You want to achieve it within a set timeframe. Whether it’s the full year or a smaller goal with a quarter deadline, set the time accordingly. This will help you stay motivated to achieve your success goals.

Tips for Setting Goals

Before you start the goal-setting process, find a place in your home that is quiet and free from distractions. This allows you to focus clearly on setting the targets that you want to achieve in the year ahead. It also gives you the space to think about what you can improve in your business and your personal life as well.

  • Let your family and friends know not to distract you for the 30 minutes or so that it may take to create your goals for the year ahead.
  • Silence your phone or place it in another room so that you’re not tempted to scroll or check messages.

Take out a piece of paper and a pen and answer these questions:

  • What do you want to achieve in 2025?
  • What worked this year? In other words, what do you want to replicate?
  • What would you do differently this year?
  • Where do you want to grow your business?
  • Were previous goals you set too easy or too hard?

These questions will help you figure out what you want before you start to create SMART goals. This way, you make more effiicient use of your limited and valuable time.

What if you feel stuck?

It’s normal to feel stuck when you’re setting goals. Even after thinking about it for a bit, it’s hard to figure out what exactly you want to achieve. If you’re stuck and aren’t sure what goals to set for the year ahead, get advice from those around you. They may be able to offer the insight that you need. If you have a mentor or coach, lean into them and their expertise. You can also brainstorm with your team; they may also be in the same situation as you and eager to get advice. Also, ask your spouse or other loved ones since they are on this journey with you.

How to Stay Motivated

Once you’ve set your goals, the real work begins. It’s easy to get sidetracked, even for the most motivated individuals. Life’s distractions can quickly derail our best intentions. As time passes, our initial enthusiasm may wane.

See your goals

To combat this, place your goals where you’ll see them daily, like on your mirror or computer screen. A constant reminder can keep your focus sharp and your motivation high. Also, take time every once in a while to visualize yourself achieving your targets. This can give you a powerful surge of motivation when you need it.

Review your goals

Don’t forget to regularly review your goals. Regularly reviewing your goals is another effective strategy. Whether weekly, monthly, or quarterly, scheduled reviews allow you to assess your progress, identify potential roadblocks, and adjust your plans as needed. This proactive approach can help you stay on track and avoid falling behind.

Share your journey

Sharing your goals with others can also be a powerful motivator. When you share your aspirations with friends, family, or colleagues, you’re creating a sense of accountability. Knowing that others are invested in your success can provide the extra push you need to stay focused and persevere.
