Reconnect with Your Why
Do you wake up feeling a little less excited about your network marketing business than you used to be? The initial spark that got you started might feel a little dimmer, especially as the year rolls on. The fall is a time when life gets busy again – the kids go back to school and the holiday season is right around the corner. It’s easy to let your business go to the back burner. But that’s no way to achieve success. How can you reconnect with your business? Find your Why.
What is Your “Why”?
At its core, your “Why” isn’t just a goal, like hitting a certain rank or earning a specific income. It’s the reason behind the goals you set. It’s the conviction that drives you to take action, even when it’s uncomfortable or hard. Think of it this way: it could be:
- The desire for financial freedom to pay off debt and live debt-free.
- The dream of more time with your family, so you can pick up your kids from school every day or go on dream vacations.
- A need to make a difference in the lives of others to help them achieve their own health, wealth, or personal development goals.
- The desire to leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
- To give back to your community or support a cause you believe in.
In network marketing, your “Why” isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s the soul of your business. It protects you from setbacks and builds resilience to remind you that a rejection today doesn’t negate your vision. It helps you keep going.
When you lead with your “Why,” you connect with prospects and team members on a deeper level. People aren’t just buying products or a business opportunity; they’re buying into your vision and the possibility for their own lives. It also prevents burnout and keeps you in the game for the long haul, far beyond the next paycheck or bonus.
Check in with your “Why”
How do you know if you need to get in touch with your “Why”?
You’re not motivated
Are you finding yourself avoiding prospecting calls or putting off team follow-ups? Is the “spark” that led you to network marketing not there?
You’re feeling negative
Do you spend more time dwelling on challenges, comparing yourself to others, or feeling discouraged? Or, maybe you’re working hard, but it feels like pushing a boulder uphill. You’re exhausted but feel you’re getting nowhere.
The best part is when your team sees your unwavering “Why,” it inspires them to find their own. A team driven by individual “Whys” is a powerful, unstoppable force. Think of your “Why” as the engine in your network marketing vehicle. Without it, you might have a nice car, but you’re just coasting by. With it, you can go through any terrain.
You feel disconnected from your goals
Your goals for starting the business now feel less exciting than they once did. Additionally, you’re performing the actions, but there’s no passion or purpose behind them. It feels like a chore, instead of a calling. And worse, your activity levels have dropped and you’re struggling to hit your targets.
If these sound like you, it’s not a sign you should quit. It’s a sign that it’s time to check in with your “Why.”
How to reconnect with your “Why”
Reigniting your “why” isn’t a quick fix; it’s a continuous process. But it’s one that is worth it.
First, get away from distractions. Turn off your phone, close your computer, find a peaceful corner of your home or even go for a walk. This isn’t something you can rush or do while multitasking.
Then, grab paper and a pen. Start with these prompts to help you get thinking. Keep asking “Why is that important to me?” until you get to the core.
- “Why did I start this network marketing business in the first place?”
- “What do I truly want my life to look like in 1, 3, or 5 years?”
- “What kind of impact do I want to make on others?”
- “What would happen if I didn’t achieve these dreams?”
- “What would it feel like to achieve my ‘Why’?”
- “If money were no object, what would I do with my time, energy, and resources?”
See your future
Close your eyes. Really see the “Why” visualized. For example, if it’s to have more time, visualize waking up on your own time, enjoying a nice breakfast with your loved ones, and taking that mid-week trip. What are the sounds? The smells? How does it feel in your body? Or, if it’s giving back, imagine the tangible impact of your contributions. The more real you make it, the more powerful it becomes.
Connect your “Why” to your business
Once you’ve reconnected with your “Why,” connect it to your daily activities. How does making five prospecting calls today contribute to your family’s financial freedom? How does learning a new social media strategy move you closer to the lifestyle you’re dreaming of?” When you find the link, regular tasks become fueled with purpose.
Write it down and make sure it’s visible
Write a concise, powerful “Why” statement that you can recall and connect with. For example: “I build my network marketing business to create generational wealth, allowing me to fully support my aging parents, fund my children’s education without debt, and dedicate my time and resources to helping the community.”
Once written, make it visible. Put it on a sticky note on your mirror, set it as your phone background, add it to your vision board, or keep it in your journal. See it, feel it, daily.
Share your “Why”
Share your “why” with your team, your mentor, or coach. Saying it aloud can make it real, and having someone else know it can provide extra motivation and give support if you need it. Your “Why” isn’t just for you; it’s your most relatable story. Use it authentically when connecting with prospects and inspiring your team. People are drawn to passion and purpose. And those are the folks you want on your team and to work with.
Celebrate wins related to your “Why”
Every step, no matter how small, that moves you closer to your “Why” deserves recognition. Small victories reinforce the power of your “Why.” It keeps you connected when it’s hard or you’re feeling unmotivated.
How can you start? Start each morning by reading your “Why” statement and then spend a few moments visualizing your ideal future. It sets the tone for your day. Also, when you get a”no”, don’t let it derail you. Immediately pull out your “Why.” Remind yourself why you started and why this one setback won’t stop you.
Remember…
Your “Why” will evolve as you grow. Schedule a monthly or quarterly review with yourself. Does your “Why” still resonate deeply? Are there new layers to uncover?
As you plan your activities for the rest of the year, make sure your business goals directly contribute to achieving your “Why.” This creates a connection between your daily actions and your goals.
A clearly defined “Why” is your secret weapon for pushing through challenges, staying consistent, and building a business that not only meets your financial goals but also fulfills your deepest desires.
