Develop the Habits of Success
Success depends on a lot of things – the goals you set, your commitment to achieving your goals, your why – just to name a few. However, all of these are dependent on the most important factor in your success – your habits.
If you’re like many network marketers, you may not realize the important role your habits play in your overall success. A network marketer could set ambitious goals, but if he hasn’t developed the habits of success, it’ll be difficult – if not impossible – for him to achieve those goals. For example, let’s say a network marketer is just starting out and she wants to make six figures this year. That may be doable depending on the size of her network and her commitment to her business. But, let’s say that she only works on her business once a week and she only sends a handful of messages to a few random people in her network. She also doesn’t follow up with the people she’s messaged. How likely is it that she’ll reach her income goals this year? Not likely, right?
But, let’s say she works on her business daily – at least five days a week. She relies on a system that helps her know who to call and when, so that she’s contacting her best customers, prospects, and distributors more often. Additionally, she follows up with her network and is always looking for ways to help and serve them. She’s not only a #PowerHourBoss; she’s also the hub of her network – the person they rely on for industry knowledge and recommendation. How likely is it that she’ll reach her income goals this year? Very likely.
What’s the difference? In the first example, she didn’t cultivate the habits of success. That is, not only didn’t prioritize her business, she also didn’t work very hard on her business. She didn’t get in the routine of working on it daily and she didn’t have a system in place to hold her accountable. Additionally, she didn’t develop the habit of following up with her network to find ways to help and serve them. In the second example, not only did she prioritize her business and make checking in with her network a normal part of her day, but she also made it a point to ask for ways she could help and serve. Over time, this created an opportunity for her to become an expert and someone who her network could rely upon.
Are your habits holding you back?
Think for a minute: which network marketer are you most like? Are you the network marketer who contacts customers every now and then and puts business on the back burner or are you the network marketer who works on your business daily and looks for ways to help your network?
Although many network marketers aspire to be the latter most fall into the first category. The best part of running your own business is that you don’t have a boss telling you what to do; the worst part of running your own business is that you don’t have a boss telling you what to do. It’s true, in business, the best and worst parts can be the same thing.
While it’s impossible to succeed when someone is on your back to work, most people find it difficult to focus without someone at least reminding them of what they need to do each day. It’s easy to put off the tasks you need to do to build the foundation for a strong business, such as contacting and following up with your network. After all, life is busy – there’s always something else that demands your attention. However, it’s impossible to achieve success this way. The good news is, you can always change your habits.
“If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.”
-Peter F. Drucker
Build better habits
The journey to better habits starts today. Once you recognize that you can do better, you will do better.
Recommit to your why
Why did you get into the business? Was it to supplement your income, be your own boss, build a financial nest egg for your children or for retirement? Whatever your reason, write it down and keep it front and center. Each day, when it’s tempting to fall back into the old habits, review your ‘why.’ It’ll motivate you to choose your business, at least for an hour a day.
Prioritize your business
If you want to achieve your goals, you must make your business a priority. After all, the tasks won’t do themselves. The thing is, you’re not being asked to sit at a desk for 8 hours each day and plug away at your business. Instead, you can contact and follow up with your network from wherever you are, whether it’s in line to get coffee, while you’re waiting for your kids to get their shoes on and get in the car, or in those rare quiet moments in the morning before the rest of the house wakes up. It’s a full hour at a time (or less) or it’s 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there throughout the day.
It’s a doable task. However, the trick is to remember to get it done, and that’s where many network marketers struggle.
Lean into tools designed to help
“Our daily behavior reveals our deepest beliefs.”
– Robin Sharma
Luckily, we created Teamzy to help! The Teamzy CRM uses your goals to help you not only work more efficiently but also more effectively. Instead of wasting time trying to figure out who to contact and what to say, Teamzy does it for you. Once you input your goals and sort your network, the Teamzy algorithm gets to work creating a daily task list of customers, prospects, and distributors to contact and follow up with. And, if you’re not sure what to say in your message, use the scripts as a template. Before you know it, you’ll have contacted everyone on your list for the day in an hour or less. Seriously, that’s all it takes.
Commit to doing these tasks daily and over time you’ll notice that working on your business becomes just another part of your day, like brushing your teeth or working out. It’s just something you do without even thinking about it. That means it has become a habit and a good habit at that.
You may also notice that your attitude changes toward your business. Instead of seeing it as a hobby, you’ll begin to take it more seriously. As a result, the people around you may begin to take it more seriously as well, especially as you achieve each milestone of your overall goal. Your customers and distributors will begin to rely on you and your expertise as well and appreciate the high level of care and service you offer. When you ask them to introduce you to other great people like them, they’ll be glad to do so.
Stay positive
Change takes time. Just as it takes time to turn tasks into habits, it takes time to enjoy the rewards of your good habits. These rewards include a growing database of loyal customers and distributors, a pipeline of prospects, increased sales, and getting closer to financial goals.
However, most people are impatient and want it now. They may get frustrated that they’re not seeing results as quickly as they had expected. As their motivation wanes, so does their desire to work on the business every day, especially if their daily tasks haven’t become habits yet.
Breaking through this roadblock is all about attitude. What we tell ourselves each day will either lift us up or tear us down. By maintaining a positive attitude and understanding that our rewards are just over the horizon, we can stay motivated and do all we need to do each day to help our businesses thrive. Whether it’s reviewing goals, reconnecting with a ‘why’, reading a favorite quote or affirmation, or listening to a song with a positive message, we can fight against the boredom and frustration that only serve to sabotage us on our journey to leading a thriving business.
