Goal Setting: An End of the Quarter Check-in

It’s the last day of the first quarter of 2020 and you know what that means – it’s time to check in on your progress on your 2020 goals! Are you on track to achieve the goals you’ve set in January or will you need to ramp up your activities in the next quarter to get back on track?

Why is it important to review your goals?

Reviewing your goals is critical for success. It’s not enough to set them in January, thinking they’ll stay top of mind throughout the entire year. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. If you go to the gym, compare how crowded it is in January to how crowded it is now. In January you may have had to wait 20 minutes for an elliptical or treadmill to free up; in March there’s a sea of empty ones.

The truth is we’re just not good at sticking to things over time… unless we have habits and processes in place to keep us accountable. Setting the goals is the easy part; turning them into reality takes time, patience, and commitment.

“People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It’s as simple as that.” Earl Nightingale

Why now is the time to review your goals

The end of the quarter is a natural stopping point to review and reflect on your goals.

  1. You’ve had three months to develop the habits that will bring you success. Committing to these habits every day, or nearly every day, for the last three months has helped make doing them automatically. By this point, you no longer have to think about doing your Power Hour, for example. You know it has to get done and, more than likely, you have a set time of day in which you work on your business.
  2. You have three months of results at your fingertips. Doing your activities every day gives you three months of results to review. That’s a lot of data! You can see what’s going right and what could use improvement.
  3. Your data will give you a more accurate picture of your progress. Data gives you a realistic view of your progress. For example, if you spent the last three months feeling as though you weren’t getting anywhere in your business even though you were doing your activities every day, your data may say otherwise. Your data may show that you’re making a ton of progress toward your goals and you’re doing way better than you’re giving yourself credit for.

“The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting and achieving goals.” Og Mandino

How to review your goals

A comprehensive goal review is a powerful way to check your progress. Now is the time to ask the following questions:

Are you on track?

This is a fairly clear-cut question. If you’re not sure, log into Teamzy and view your data. Use this information to help you assess whether or not you’re where you need to be at this time of the year. As you review your progress, consider the following questions:

  • Do you have a vacation or event later in the year that may prevent you from doing your daily network marketing activities? A long vacation or a big event like a wedding or graduation are certainly happy events; however, they also prevent you from working on your business. The good news is, you can plan ahead and increase your activities beforehand so that you don’t fall off-track.
  • Does your business have periods that tend to be naturally slower than others? For example, does business slow down at the beginning of the summer only to pick up again in the fall? If you know that business tends to slow down at certain times of the year, you can ramp up your activities during the most active times. That way, you and your business can ride out the slow times without impacting your progress toward your goals.

Are you happy with your results so far?

If you’re on track, you’re happy with your results and if you’re not on track you’re unhappy with them, right? Perhaps.

In most cases, you’ll be stoked if you’re on track with your goals. However, if you set the bar lower than you should have, you may have that nagging feeling that you should’ve set them higher. Similarly, if you’re on track to achieving very ambitious goals, but doing so has left you feeling exhausted or stressed out, you want to dial it down a notch or approach it differently. There’s no point driving hard toward success if it leaves you feeling unhappy and burned out. This is the time to reassess your approach to achieving your goals and update your game plan so that you feel energized as you chase your dreams.

What’s going right/What needs improvement?

This is the opportunity to assess your approach and pat yourself on the back for all the things you’re doing well. Have you been a rock start at following up with your customers and prospects and checking in with your distributors? Give yourself a pat on the back! Have you consistently completed your network marketing activities every day or most days? Well done! Celebrate your success!

Now, what are some areas that could use improvement? Are you finding it difficult to remember to log in to Teamzy every day? Are you finding yourself succumbing to distractions? Do you have trouble making your business a priority every day? There are all common challenges network marketers face. You’re definitely not alone they’re your challenges as well. Once you’ve identified areas of improvement, think of the steps you can take to get back on track. For example, if you easily fall prey to distractions, find a quiet spot in your home (or even sit in your car) and power through your follow-ups and connections for the day. Let your loved ones know not to disturb you for 30 minutes while you get it done.

What if you’ve fallen off track?

Although it’s more common for people to fall off track later in the year, it is possible to do so in the first quarter. It could be due to unforeseen circumstances, a setback, or just not having the right processes in place to develop the habits of success.

If you’re off track, there is a temptation to adjust your goals and make it easier. Although this may be an option later in the year, at this point, it’s best to rethink your strategy. Don’t decrease your goal; increase your effort. Often it helps to attach your goals from another angle. For example, if you find it too difficult to do your network marketing activities for a full hour every day, find 15 minutes at several points throughout your day to work on your business. There’s no rule that your Power Hour has to occur in one sitting. In fact, for the busiest of us, that’s just not going to happen. Many network marketers work full or part-time at other jobs and others take care of their loved ones and children and find it next to impossible to find a full hour to do anything. However, breaking up your Power Hour into smaller chunks of time ensures you’ll get it all done in a way that works best for the time you have available, even if it’s only 10 or 15 minutes at a time.

Remember, there’s no one path to success and sometimes you’ll need to create the path that works best for you and your goals. The first step is creating goals that are ambitious, yet achievable. The next step is to create a plan to help you get there. The final step is to take the time to review your progress and address issues before they become huge problems.
