Goals Off-Track? How to Stay on Track to Reach Your Goals

One common theme you may have noticed if you’re read this blog for a while is that goals are very important. In fact, it’s one of the most important things you can do if you want to succeed in business. Goals give you a target to aim for – without them, how will you know if you’ve succeeded? If you’re like most network marketers, you set goals in January; but, do you remember what they are? Although the most successful network marketers review them regularly, many of us do not. And, as a result, we find that by this time of the year, we begin to get off-track. So how do you get and stay on track to reach the goals you’ve set?

How to get and stay on track to reach your goals

It’s easier to reach your goals if you do the following.

Ask yourself why you set those goals to begin with

There was a reason you set the goals you did. If you’ve already discovered your Why, chances are your goals align with it. In this case, when you review your goals, you’ll also want to review your Why. This will remind you of why you get up in the morning to do what you do. It will also keep you motivated to do your Power Hours, commit to professional development, and continue to offer your customers, prospects, and distributors the highest level of service.

If you’re not sure what your Why is, you may have set your goals based on what you want to achieve this year. That’s fine, too. However, you’ll have more personal stake in achieving your goals if you base them on your Why.

Start with a vision

Visualization is a powerful exercise that can help you reach your goals. When you can see the life you want to live, it’s much easier to get on track to make it reality. Most people set goals for the short term – they want to get in shape or make more money. However, these goals may not align with a long-term goal that will help them live their best lives. Since they don’t have a personal connection to the goal and don’t see how it fits in with the rest of their lives, it’s much harder to achieve it.

Visualizing helps you focus on what matters. It helps you pinpoint your motivation for wanting to set the goals you do. For example, perhaps you want to get in shape so that you live a longer, healthier life than your parents. Or, maybe you had some health issues and want to get healthy so that you can keep up with your kids. In your visualization practice, you may see yourself keeping up with your kids and grandkids and feeling great, instead of winded. Or, maybe you want to lead a successful business because you’re sick of making other people rich. You want to work on your own terms so that you have plenty of time to spend with loved ones or doing things that matter to you – volunteering or working on hobbies. Visualizing allows you to picture the life you want to live – one where you’re leading a thriving business, while doing activities and work that you love.

The visualization process

So, what do you see? Close your eyes and imagine your life a few years from now. Note what you see, smell, hear, taste, touch and feel emotionally. Who is around you? Where are you located? What are you doing? What is everyone else doing? Take in your surroundings. Then, when you’re ready, open your eyes and write down everything you experienced. Spare no detail.  What stood out the most? This process gives you clear insight into what you want in life, what your dream life looks like. The next step is to make it reality, and that starts with a plan.

Plan for success

Setting goals in the first step; creating a plan to achieve them is the next. What do you need to do right now to make those goals happen?

In network marketing, it’s your relationships that hold the key to it all. They’re central to fulfilling your Why, achieving your goals, and creating a life you love. That’s why it’s so important to continue to grow and build relationships with everyone in your network. This doesn’t mean you need to call and email and text them everyday; however, it’s important that you stay in touch with your network consistently and regularly.

We created Teamzy to take the guesswork out of who to call each day. Once you upload and sort your network and set your goals, our algorithm creates a daily list of people to reach out to. During your Power Hour, reach out to those folks and make their day. If they have questions or want to talk another time, set a follow up to reach out to them again. It’s that easy. By reaching out to maintain contact with them and following up when you say you will, you’ll build trust, which is the most important part of building any relationship. The more your network trusts you, the more they want to work with you and help you build your business.

Don’t give up

Success takes time. Achieving your goals also takes time and patience. When setbacks arise or we just feel it’s taking too long, it’s easy to lose motivation and fall off track. That’s why it’s so important to tie your goals in with your Why. Your Why will help you stay motivated even when you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. It will help you maintain perspective so you can stay the course, especially when you feel like giving up.

Some days are harder than others. There are days when you’ll feel frustrated because no one in your network seems to be responding. Or they don’t seem interested in the opportunity you’re offering. On those days, it’s easy to want to throw in the towel and quit. In fact, this is when many network marketers quit – they feel it’s too hard or too frustrating and they give up. However, on every journey to success, there are speed bumps and challenges. The most successful people see those challenges and find ways to overcome them. Instead of quitting, they dig in and work harder and smarter through those challenges. And, if they experience a setback, they learn the lesson so if they encounter it again, they don’t make the same mistake twice. They lean into their mentors and coaches and even their teams for advice to help them overcome the challenges and setbacks they face, knowing that they can learn so much from other people. In the process, they gain critical skills as well as confidence in their abilities. And, as a result, they feel stronger as network marketers. This strength and confidence helps them build even stronger businesses.

Review your goals regularly

This is critical. We often lose sight of our goals because we set them and forget them. At least until the end of the year when we go to set new goals and wonder why we didn’t achieve the ones we’ve already set. Once you’ve set your goals and made a plan to achieve them, you have to review them from time to time. How often is up to you. Some network marketers review them once a week; others every few months. The important part is to do it so they always stay top of mind.

Place them where you can see them

Often it helps to print out your goals and post them where you can see them daily, whether it’s on a mirror, in your work space at home or even on your phone. Where do you think you’ll see them regularly? Read them over so you always know what they are.

Check in with your progress

The best motivator is seeing your progress toward your goals. Teamzy makes this easy by showing you how you’re doing. Every time you log a connection with your network, your progress updates. You can review your progress to see how close you’re getting to your goals. If you’re ahead of the game, you can celebrate. If you’re not, you can see where you need to focus to help you get and stay on track.

Share your goals

Accountability is so important. By sharing your goals with others, you invite them to hold you accountable. Share your goals with your spouse or partner, your kids, your coach, your mentor and your team. Telling other people about them, and even why you set them, will encourage you to stay the course. After all, you don’t want to let other people down. Your coach and your mentor will help you stay committed to your goals, even when you experience a setback or a hiccup. Similarly, your team will provide encouragement to help you on your journey.
