One of the most common concerns of small business owners, both new ones and those who have been in business for a long time, is “How do I grow my business?”
Often, they’ve hit a plateau in their businesses and aren’t sure how to proceed.
Although they really want to grow, they’re just not sure how to go about it; they may not have the knowledge or tools to turn their dreams into reality.
As a result, they get stuck.
They become unmotivated and instead of tenaciously striving to reach and set new ambitious goals, they just keep on chugging along, doing everything that got them to their current level, but unsure of what else they can do to bring their businesses to that next level.
They’d likely throw their hands up at this point and say.
Sound familiar? It happens to every business owner at some point in their journey to success.
Even the most successful business owners often struggle to replicate their success or take their businesses to the next level.
If they achieved success once, it should be easy to do it again, right?
The principles of relationship marketing remain the same; your relationships are at the core of your business, which in turn, produce referrals and introductions.
However, there will always be new tools at your fingertips that will help you leverage your time and relationships for success.
It’s up to you to learn more about them as well as continue to build the habits that lead to success.
How? Through continued learning and training.
Why training is important
Think of a successful athlete; any athlete will do, whether it’s an Olympian or a member of your favorite professional sports team.
In all cases, although some may be blessed with natural talent, they achieved success through practice and training, starting when they began in the sport.
Natural talent only takes an athlete so far; it’s up to them to practice and continue to develop their talent, and that involves training.
You may be thinking, “That’s fine and dandy for athletes, but what about me?”
The analogy works just as well for salespeople, too!
Think about it.
Now, there may be people who are naturally great at sales, who can sell anything to anyone.
However, even the most gifted salesperson needs training to keep their skills sharp and applicable in these changing times. In fact, it’s totally possible for someone without natural talent, but great habits and skills, to achieve more success than the salesperson with natural talent.
How could that be?
They’ve committed to more and more training and soon they’re good habits and skills far surpass any amount of natural talent another person has.
“Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes
Training takes you to the next level you wish to reach.
And, once you’ve reached that next level and mastered all you can there, it’s necessary to continue the learning process so you can gain the tools that’ll take you to a higher level.
How will you know when it’s time to hit the training again?
When you feel as if you can’t grow anymore, it’s time for that external push forward.
What’s keeping you from achieving success?
It’s clear that training is important; however, so many people don’t take any.
Why is that, especially when they know how much they and their businesses can benefit from it?
Most often, they listen to that nagging voice in their heads that is quick to send up objections.
Or, it could be a spouse or another person in their lives who vocally voices these objections whenever they bring it up.
“I have no time!”
This is the most common objection.
We’re so busy with a thousand other commitments that the thought of taking on one more thing sends us into a panic, even if it’s something that can benefit us in the long run.
Your business is entitled to a share of your time.
Training is another aspect of business; it’s something you need to do if you want to achieve your goals and lead a successful business.
There’s no way around it.
If you don’t have time for your business, how can you expect to succeed?
Training doesn’t need to take up all of your time either.
Take Teamzy’s Elite Business Bootcamp, a 12-week training intended to give you the tools and tactics you need to plan and lead a successful relationship-based business.
Although you have activities to do every day, it only takes between 30 minutes and an hour of your time.
Then you’re free to work on the rest of the tasks on your to-do list.
“I can’t afford it.”
Just as you may not function well when you’re starving, your business won’t function well if it’s starving for money.
However, many business owners starve their businesses of money, especially when they’re just starting out and they may not have had many sales.
You’ve likely heard the saying “It takes money to make money,” right?
It’s a popular saying because it’s true!
If you want to build a successful business, you have to infuse money into it.
Since you are your business, a large part of this investment involves investing in yourself so that you have the knowledge, tools, and skills to lead your business to success.
“Oh, I’d like to, but I feel so selfish spending money on training when X, Y, and Z are happening.”
For every opportunity, there will always be an excuse not to take it.
The key is to have enough faith in yourself to look beyond the excuse and take advantage of the opportunity to grow and learn.
“I’m just not ready right now.”
This excuse is akin to “I’ll take training next year when things at home/in the business/in my life are a bit more settled.”
If you’re waiting for the perfect time to do something to improve your business, including signing up for a training that’ll help your business succeed, it’ll never come.
There is no perfect time. Life is funny that way.
Just when all the cards you want are aligned just so… something happens to move all the cards around again, taking you back two steps (or even back to the beginning in some cases).
Don’t wait for the perfect time to work on yourself and your business; instead, make it a priority to do it now, even if you’re busy.
In fact, the busier you are, the more productive you may become.
The trick is to make it a priority.
When you write out your to-do list for the day or for the week, place a big, fat star by the training activities to ensure you complete it before anything else.
Sure, you may have domestic tasks on there, such as laundry and dishes, but certainly, those can wait an hour while you complete your training, right?
I mean, it’s not like they’ll walk away (unless it’s a been a few days and then that may very well happen).
All joking aside, training is critical for success.
In fact, if you want to succeed, consider taking a training of some sort every year to keep your skills sharp and your knowledge up-to-date.
When you stop learning, it’s common to backslide into old bad habits.
A common side effect of all of this is drift.
Drift occurs silently and slowly over time. It starts with putting off your daily activities until tomorrow because you’re just too busy today… and then pushing them off again the demands of life are all tugging at the hem of your sweater.
It continues with neglecting to do a follow-up and then that trickles into not following up with two or three people, which then turns into not following up with anyone for weeks.
It’s putting a pin in your business for the week when life gets hectic, but never coming back around to it.
All of these things don’t happen immediately, they happen gradually.
Before you know it, you’re nowhere close to achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself.
You may feel frustrated and wonder, “How did this happen?”
Drift is a threat to every business owner at one time or another; however, if you enroll in trainings and seek to continually grow your business, you can keep drift at bay.
That’s not to say you won’t drift a little bit; however, this time, you’ll be able to see that you’re beginning to drift and will take steps to stop it and correct your course.
