Kick Your Motivation into Overdrive

Motivation is something that comes and goes. Some days you feel like you’re on top of the world and you can tackle anything that comes your way. Other days you wish you could lay on the beach with a delicious drink and just do nothing. But you can’t build a business doing nothing. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is totally unmotivated and 10 is so motivated that you could sprint a marathon while connecting with people during your Power Hour, how motivated do you feel right now?

Don’t worry if you’re not at the upper end of the motivation scale. Most people will fall somewhere in the middle, especially at this time of year. A few months into the year and most of us are feeling less motivated than we were in January. This is normal! Motivation rises and falls throughout the year. The key is to keep it somewhat steady. Ideally, you’d be somewhere in the middle where you’re motivated enough to get everything done and perhaps a little more. We all have days when we’re just not feeling it. And, as the days get longer, those days may become more frequent. Here’s how to turn those feelings around.

Motivation tip 1: Get inspired

Inspiration and motivation go hand in hand. When you feel your motivation waning, it’s your cue to get inspired.  Inspiration gives us the lift that we need to do great things. What inspires one person may be different from what inspires other people. However, it does help to ask people what inspires them especially if you’re feeling uninspired yourself. Although yours may not be the same, you may get an idea if you feel stuck.

What inspires you? Is it a person, a movie, a book, a song, a quote? Tap into your inspiration! For example, if a song inspires you, listen to it on repeat. Belt out the words. Before long you’ll get that surge of motivation. If it’s a movie or book, find the quotes that are most inspirational and post them, where you can see them. That way, you can read them whenever you need a quick pick-me-up. And sometimes a quick pick me up is all you get back on track.

Still not feeling inspired?

If you aren’t inspired by anything in particular, search ‘inspirational quotes’  in your browser to get a list of quotes to review. Do any strike you as impactful? Think about what drives you. This is your Why and it’s as good a motivation as any. Place a photo that represents your Why near you so you can look at it and reflect when you need motivation. If you don’t have any, then we can help you with that too. All it takes is ten or fifteen minutes to sit and think about what you want in life. Once you have the picture you can think about what it will take to get there.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

— Dr. Seuss

Motivation Tip 2: Get to work

Sometimes you just have to dig in and start working, even when you don’t feel like it. The good thing about Teamzy is that you can just get started. You don’t have to come up with a list or look for a number. You don’t have to think about who you need to call or organize a list of who you need to get back with before you can even start.  It’s all there. Just sign in and start connecting with people on your dashboard. It’s that easy to just dive in and get started.

Your daily Power Hour is the best way to build your business by making consistent contact with your network. In an hour or less, you can reach out and connect with the people who drive your business. While we recommend taking the full hour to work on your business by working on personal development, it’s okay to stop after you’ve contacted everyone on your list for that day. You can get back to personal development another day.

A funny thing happens when you just start, you might find your motivation increasing. Even if it doesn’t increase right away, at least you’ve been productive. Try to keep being productive as you improve your motivation.

Still not feeling it?

What if you still don’t feel motivated after your Power Hour? Sometimes motivation takes time. In this case, you have to adopt a fake it til you make it approach to motivation – pretend your motivation is much higher than it is and dive in. Keep at it for a few more days or weeks. Act more motivated than you feel and you may convince yourself that it’s true. Or at least you’ll feel proud that you persevered during a challenge when it felt easier to give up. This is different from the “fake it to you make it” approach to success. You can’t fake success. Faking motivation is merely to trick your brain into being motivated when you don’t feel like it.

“There is nothing impossible to they who will try.”

— Alexander the Great

Motivation tip 3: Motivate someone else

Motivation is contagious so if you’re not feeling it now, try to motivate someone else. There is a bonus to this approach. This is a great way to connect with your team. It’s important to connect with your team on a regular and consistent basis. One of the best ways to bond with them is to encourage them to share their own experiences and advice for overcoming certain challenges including maintaining high motivation. Think of it as a bonding experience

You could try to motivate your team as a whole and reach out to them with inspirational quotes. Or you could share your struggle with motivation with them and ask for their tips for staying motivated. This transparency makes you more relatable as a leader and encourages a sense of team spirit on the team. You’re probably not the only one whose motivation has slid and this gives your team a chance to share with one another the things that keep them motivated.

 “Spread love everywhere you go.”

— Mother Teresa

Motivation Tip 4: Bribe yourself

Think of it as a little reward. Sometimes the best way to motivate yourself to do something is to promise yourself a reward at the end. The key is to make sure that the reward is appropriate for the task. For example you don’t want to have an expensive shopping spree as a reward for doing an hour’s worth of work. Something more appropriate might be taking a bit of time to spend working on your hobby or doing something that you enjoy.
