How to Recruit and Build a Successful Team
Your team is part of the fabric of your business. The stronger your team, the stronger the foundation of your business. Before you lead a successful team, you have to recruit people who align with your goals and values as a business. In a perfect world, these folks would find you. In reality, you have to reach out and find the right people to ask to join your team and nurture success. How do you create a successful team? Here are several tips to help you start building a successful team.
Recruit the right people
The most successful teams consist of similarly minded people. Whether you have similar goals, similar styles, or other similarities, it helps to build cohesion. Some of your favorite people would make the best team members.
If you’re just starting out in network marketing, you have an opportunity to start fresh and build the foundation for a strong team. Even if you have an established team it’s never too late to build the team you wish to lead. The key is to identify ideal team members. Look in your network and see who would be a great tea member.
Start with your top advocates or those who seem most excited about the products or services that you have. Since they love the business already it might be easier to recruit them to join your team. Then turn your attention to people who you socialize with. They may be open to going into business for themselves or earning extra money. Talk to them about your business and gauge their interest in network marketing. You can also ask them if they know anyone who would be a great fit for your team. We tend to socialize with people who are very similar to ourselves and so if they are or would be great team members, then the people they know might also follow suit. In any event be sure to follow up with prospects and ask for introductions from your top advocates.
Build a strong foundation
The key to a strong foundation for any team is consistency. You have to be consistent in your values and your goals. It also helps if you consistently follow a system and encourage your team to do the same. When you all value your relationships above the sale and work towards building relationships with your networks, then you can share tips that lead to success. You can encourage one another when times are challenging and embrace and celebrate your successes together.
But first, you have to make sure that new team members are on the same page. As you recruit new people to your team it’s important to share the goals of the team and what you stand for. For example, if the new team member wants to use traditional aggressive sales tactics to close the sale, then it’s important to make sure they understand that your team values relationships.
Next, it’s important to provide mentorship and training support, especially for new team members who are new to network marketing. They may initially feel awkward or nervous as they get used to leveraging their relationships to build their businesses. They may need more guidance as they learn and grow. Even experienced network marketers may need training and support as they grow their businesses. Recommending training programs and offering guidance and advice will help them through the process and create solidarity with the team.
Finally, it is very important to set clear expectations and goals for the team. Each team member may have their own goals that they seek to achieve. However, it’s important to set an example and create clear expectations about what you expect from your team. If you expect your team to value their relationships, you not only have to practice it yourself but also encourage your team to follow that example. That means connecting with them the way that you expect them to connect with everyone in their network. This gives them an example to follow. It also creates the expectation that you expect them to do the same for everyone in their network.
Develop your team’s leadership skills
Although you are the leader of your team you shouldn’t be the only leader on your team. People on your team have leadership skills, you just have to help them cultivate them. Identify the people on your team who would make great leaders. Perhaps they have excellent people skills or they are naturally go-getters. Help them cultivate their skills to amplify their natural gifts. They may not realize that they have these skills and so they need you to point it out to them. If they’re not currently on your team, you can recruit leaders to your team.
Cultivating leadership qualities includes not only encouraging them. It also means directing them to training or personal development opportunities to grow these skills as well. Encourage them to read books, listen to books or podcasts, and take training programs that help them build their budding leadership skills.
Empowerment
Some people have a fear of success. It sounds contrary, but some people are afraid to succeed or they’re not sure how to get there. What they need is a dose of empowerment. That’s where you come in. Encourage your team to succeed even in challenging times. Give them the support that they need to cultivate their skills, especially leadership skills as they grow their businesses. After all, they are the leaders of their businesses. Their networks look to them for expertise and advice about their industries. Give them the confidence to tap into their expertise especially as they begin to grow their businesses.
Mentorship
Although some people succeed on their own, most often they succeed with the help of others. Mentors offer advice but also share their experiences to help others who may be new to the industry. A mentor can help their businesses and offer advice and the benefit of their experiences to avoid challenges. However, your team members can provide mentorship opportunities to one another. This occurs when they share how they avoided a challenge or how they wish they had avoided a challenge. It also occurs when they share their successes. As humans, we naturally learn from one another. Sharing experiences provides a level of mentorship that allows your team to learn from one another.
Cultivate positive team dynamics
A positive culture can help your team succeed. People may feel naturally competitive with one another. Competition is not bad. However,it’s important to foster a sense of camaraderie and positive team dynamics. If you are a positive person and are a positive leader then you may attract other positive people like yourself. That’s not to say that everyone has to be a Pollyanna, but a general sense of positivity is important to encourage positive team dynamics. Ineffective leaders pit team members against each other.
Instead, the goal should be to foster strong relationships among team members. Your team should be eager to share their experiences and successes with one another. They understand that by sharing their experiences and their successes, they can help other people succeed as well. More experienced network marketers on the team should be willing and eager to share their experiences with newer network marketers. The more success there is on the team, the more successful the team will be.
Overcome challenges
Resistance
Of course, on any team, there may be resistance. Often, this resistance comes from more experienced people who may be used to doing things their own way. Sometimes this resistance comes from people who have a negative outlook. While you may not be able to change their point of view, you may be able to mitigate the damage that their resistance may cause to the team. This is where being consistent in your values and confident in your leadership makes an impact. This gives you the strength To address these challenges head-on. You have the confidence to speak with those who seem contrary in order to get them on the same page as you.
Motivation
What if you’re leading a team that is struggling? There is hope for you too. The key is to identify their motivation and keep that motivation up. Start with finding commonality in order to foster team spirit. Then foster a sense of positivity. Look for all the positive things that your team has going for it. Next, commit to a system and encourage everyone to follow it. Once you’ve laid this foundation, set your expectations and your goals. Although it may take time, it is worth it. And, once you’ve unlocked their potential, you can recruit more great people.
