Self-Care: How to Make Time for it this Fall

Have you ever gotten so wrapped up in your business and the busy-ness of life that you’ve felt frazzled and just totally out of sorts? Business owners often get so involved in their businesses, and everything else in life, that they completely forget to take care of themselves. Some even see it as a badge of honor that they’re constantly busy from the time they get up to the time they go to bed and they haven’t taken time off in months or even years. Is that something to be proud of though? There is an argument to made for prioritizing self-care, especially if you want to succeed.

Although there may be the rare person who doesn’t need to rest, most of us need that time to gather our thoughts, process what we’ve learned, and let our minds and bodies take a break. You are your business, which makes you the most important person in your business. If you’re feeling off, it can impact more than your motivation; it can also impact your whole business.

Taking time out

Taking time for yourself is an essential part of business, especially if you want to achieve your goals and enjoy success. However, we’ve been trained to think that we must work, work, work all the time in order to achieve even just a sliver of success. Luckily, many of us have begun to realize that rest is essential to performance. Successful people – whether they’re elite businesspeople or elite athletes – include time for rest in their daily schedules.

This has become even more apparent this year with the global pandemic. Many of us have been forced to slow down. We’ve also had to take stock of our goals, our health, and so much more. Although as network marketers, many of us are busier than ever, we’ve still had to adjust to a new normal in the other areas of our lives. All of this change creates stress, which makes rest even more important to our overall health and wellbeing.

Making time for self-care

Like anything else in life that matters, you have to make time for self-care. However, many people are reluctant to do so. Why? “Because I’m just so busy,” they exclaim. “I just don’t have the time.”

LIfe may have slowed down in many respects, but we’re busier than ever in others. This makes prioritizing that much more important. Like your Power Hour, you have to schedule time for self-care. Sure, it may seem indulgent at first, especially if you have the mindset that you have to be doing something at all times. However, remind yourself that if you want to thrive in business, you have to take care of yourself. After all, you can’t give others your best if you’re not at your best.

Self-Care: Take care of your health

If you’re a network marketer who runs a health and wellness-related business, you may already make time for self-care and not even realize it. Taking care of your health includes eating right and exercising every day. This means eating whole foods that nourish your body so you have the energy to tackle the tasks on your to-do list. Sure, an indulgence here and there is fine, but if you want to feel your best, it’s important to eat a variety of healthy food daily.

If you’re in the habit of reaching for unhealthy snacks when you’re hungry or bored, make a conscious effort to choose healthy snacks instead. Sure, unhealthy snacks give you a short boost of energy; however, they also make you feel depleted when the surge subsides. Healthy snacks give you an energy boost that may not be as dramatic, but it lasts longer.

“Take care of our body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

-Jim Rohn

Self-care also includes moving your body every day. Although this includes a full workout, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to pump iron, run on the treadmill, or take a class every day. For many, this includes a walk around the block, taking a bike ride or playing ball with the kids, or doing yoga stretches throughout the day. It doesn’t matter what you do; it only matters that you move. Getting your blood pumping does wonders for your energy and body; it also reduces stress and improves your attitude as well.

Self-Care: Take care of your mind

Your brain is arguably the hardest working organ in the body. Not only does it need to keep your body functioning, but it also allows you to think. Be sure you’re nourishing it with good things as well.

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

– Dr. Seuss

Commit to learning

Learning not only keeps your brain healthy and active, but it also changes its actual structure. Every time you expand your knowledge, you basically improve the function of your brain. In short, learning keeps your brain sharp.

But, it’s more than that. The more you learn about your industry, the better equipped you are to help your network. They’ll seek you out to ask questions because they’ll see you as an expert. Since you’re so knowledgeable about your industry, they’ll think you’re wise in other areas as well.

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”

– B.B. King

Consume all the information you can

Learning takes many forms. In fact, you may be learning right now while you read.

  • Take an online class or read the biographies of inspirational business and industry leaders.
  • Subscribe to magazines – both print and digital – that pertain to business and your industry. For example, if your network marketing business is health related, subscribe to health and fitness magazines. If your network marketing business is skincare related, subscribe to beauty magazines.
  • Listen to business and industry-related podcasts and audiobooks. The best thing about podcasts and audiobooks is you can listen to them anywhere – in the car or while you’re working out.

Self-Care: Take care of your soul

In addition to taking care of your mind and health, it’s important to take care of your soul.

Connect with your spiritual side

Feed your soul with spiritual pursuits, whether it’s taking time to pray every day or reading sacred texts. Even spending a few minutes in silence or meditation can help you feel more at ease.

“Only surround yourself with people who will lift you higher.”

-Oprah Winfrey

Connect with other people

Social connection helps to nourish our souls. Think about how you feel after you connect with someone. You probably feel happier and a bit lighter too. At a time when we’re having less face-to-face contact than before, it’s all the more important to reach out to the people who lift us up and nourish our souls. Send a quick text or message over social media to check in with your loved ones and let them know you’re thinking of them. Schedule a meet up with your favorite people over Zoom, Skype, or Google Hangouts. Or, write a note to someone who means a lot to you and send it through the mail (everyone loves to get mail, right?). These connections not only make us feel better and less alone in the world, but they also help build our relationships with the people who mean the most to us.
