Are You Productive or Just Busy?
How often do you feel busy? If you’re like most people, you probably feel busy right now. Most of us, when we create our daily to-do lists, feel stressed each time we add a new task to the list. We wonder when we’re going to get it all done. What makes it worse, is that as the day progresses, more things are added to the list. As a result, we often feel like we’re never going to get it all done. After all, there are only so many hours in the day and we have to sleep and eat. How can you become more productive?
We marvel at the most productive people that we know, whether we know them personally or they’re on our teams or in our networks. We are in awe of their success and wonder how they get it all done. Do they have more hours in the day than we do? Are they outsourcing things to other people? How do they do it? The reality is they don’t have more hours in the day than we do, and while they may outsource some tasks to others or put them off to another day, they manage to do the one thing that many of us have trouble with and that’s prioritizing their lists.
Prioritizing your to-do list makes the difference between being productive and being just busy all the time. If you feel like you can’t get everything done in the day, you may fall into the latter category. Want to become more productive? Here’s how.
How to tell the difference
To become more productive, you have to identify where your weakness lies. Are you productive or are you just busy? Here’s how to know the difference:
- Do you feel drained at the end of the day?
- Do you feel as if you have accomplished a lot or do you look at your list and have a mini freak out?
- Do you feel as if you will never complete your to-do list?
- When you look at your list, do you feel as if you’re wasting time on small insignificant tasks?
- Do you feel as if you are adding more tasks than you are completing?
If you feel drained at the end of the day or you look at your list and have a mini freak out, and you feel as if you’re never going to complete your list because more things are added to it than you can complete in a day or you feel like you’re wasting all your time on small and significant tasks, then you may just be busy.
Get more done
The most productive people feel fulfilled at the end of the day. Even though they may not have completed everything on their to-do list, they feel as if they made some real Headway. Although their to-do lists may be long they do see a light at the end of the tunnel. And even as they add more tasks to the list, they are confident they’ll be able to complete everything. They don’t waste their time on small insignificant tasks and focus on what is most important first. Although they may add small tasks to their list, they are sure to complete the most important tasks first. The good news is that you don’t have to be busy and you can become a more productive network marketer. You just need to cultivate the right habits. The most important habit is prioritizing.
Productive tip 1: Identify key distractions
Distractions are your Kryptonite, especially as a network marketer. We are all guilty of succumbing to the distractions of the day. These are the things that seem important but are not. They are just effective at snatching away our attention from the tasks that matter. What are your biggest distractions? For many, their phones are a distraction. Whether we are spending time playing Wordle or other games or scrolling social media, many of us spend too much time on our gadgets. That’s not to say that your gadget isn’t useful, after all, your gadget plays a vital role in your Power Hour. However, it is important to make sure that we’re using our gadgets to be productive during our Power Hour, not to escape connecting with our networks during our power hour.
What are some of your other distractions? For one day, take note of everything that distracts you. What grabs your attention away from the most important tasks you are working on? If you find that the same distractions are stealing your attention, then note them. Once you’ve identified what your biggest distractions are it will be easier to ignore them in the future.
Productive tip 2: Cultivate good habits
The next step is to develop good habits of productivity. To help you ignore distractions, it’s important to set up strategies to make it easier to do so.
Time blocking
One of the biggest strategies that people use is to time block their day. Time blocking sounds boring; however, it is essential if you want to become more productive. What is time blocking? It’s the process of blocking off parts of your day in which you focus solely on a task at hand, preferably one on your to-do list. This way, you have a set time in which you will focus on the most important tasks on your list.
Outside of this time, you can permit yourself to succumb to distractions. One thing you should time block in your day is your Power Hour. This is an important block of time in which you connect with your network. It doesn’t have to be a full hour. Many network marketers, especially those with smaller networks, can complete their Power Hour in 30 minutes or less. If you have a very large database, you may take the full hour. Even if they do not take the full hour, many network marketers use their extra time to focus on personal development. Additionally, you don’t have to spend a full hour on your Power Hour; you can break the hour into smaller segments such as 2 30-minute segments or 4 15-minute segments. It doesn’t matter how you block your time, what matters is that you spend it on your business.
What are your priorities?
In addition to time blocking, another good habit is to prioritize your day. This involves selecting the one or two tasks on your to-do list that you must complete each day. These are your top two priorities and you must complete them no matter what. These are the tasks that you will focus on during your time blocks. Once these are complete, then you can move on to the next most important tasks on your list.
This process allows you to focus on the most important tasks so that you do not succumb to distractions or waste time on the less important tasks on your list. Sure, every task seems important; however, the point is to pinpoint the most important tasks. At first, this will take practice. It’s normal to see every task as important. However, over time it will be easier to easily pinpoint the tasks that are important each day. This will not only help you save time and use your time more wisely, but you’ll find that you’ll be able to get more done.
