Are You Living Up to Your Why?

What is your reason for working hard on your business? What is your purpose for starting your business? If you have one, it’s your Why. Your Why keeps you on track and allows you to focus when you need it most. It also helps you combat procrastination and stay motivated to achieve your goals.

If you’re not sure of what your purpose is, there’s no better time to find it. Here’s how:

Find your Why

Finding your why is a powerful way to kickstart your success. It helps you cut through the unimportant distractions of the day and focus on the tasks and activities that can get you closer to your goals. Although it’s not required to succeed, it helps if you have one. Even better if you use it to help you create SMART goals for your life and business that you want to achieve. When you have a Why, you may find that it’s easier to reach your goals because you feel personally invested in them.

Why it’s essential to have a Why

Even if you don’t think you have one, you likely already do – you just haven’t realized it yet. In fact, your Why played a role in starting your network marketing business. Did you want more freedom to spend your time the way you wished? Or perhaps you wanted to earn more money on the side doing what you love – connecting with people. Maybe you experienced such amazing results with a product or service that you want to share it with everyone you know. Whatever the reason, you feel a personal connection to it that you may not have felt at a job before. That’s why many of us feel disconnected from the 9 to 5 grind – sure, we know we need to make money, but those jobs may not align with our purpose in life. That’s why many of us start our network marketing business as a side hustle until we grow our businesses enough to commit to it full-time.

Keep excuses at bay

When you have a Why, it’s easier to fight off excuses. One of the biggest reasons people give up is they don’t have the motivation or willpower to keep going. Often, they quit before they truly get started. In order to overcome the excuses, you have to let your Why-power take over where your willpower gives up. It prevents you from giving into the easy excuses that keep you from achieving your goals.

So, what is your purpose?

If you’ve been a Teamzy subscriber or have been reading the blog for a while, you know we’re big on helping people find their Why. We want you to find your purpose so you serve your clients even better. Get out a pen and paper or the notes app on your phone and answer these questions:

  • Why did you choose to become a distributor for your company?
  • How have the products changed your life? (e.g., have you had dramatic results from using them? If your life has changed because of your products, your story may inspire others.)
  • What is the ultimate goal of your business? Did you start it so you can make some extra money on the side or do you wish to turn it into your full-time career?
  • What does achieving your goals mean for you and your family? Take some time to visualize what your life would look like if you lived by your Why and achieved your goals. Take it all in – what you see, hear, smell, touch, and feel. How do you feel?
  • Why is this meaningful? This is the heart of the question and will be personal to you.

Once you have your answers, read what you’ve written. Can you spot your Why? If not, take time to mull it over and revisit it later on. However, once you’ve figured it out, write it down where you can see it regularly.

How to live up to your Why

One of the best ways to honor your Why is to live up to it daily. That means using it on a daily basis. Here’s how:

Use your Why daily.

Review your Why and keep it where you can see it on a regular basis. This will help you ensure you stay on track and will help it become part of your mindset. Whether you write it on a sticky note, have it as the wallpaper on your phone, or place it in a frame on your desk, keep your Why where you can see it daily.

Make it part of your goal setting.

Your Why can help you set goals you can’t wait to achieve. Often people avoid setting goals because they don’t feel they’re good at it. They think they’re not going to achieve them anyway so why bother? But the truth is, they just don’t feel personally connected to the goals. If you don’t have a personal investment in achieving them, it’ll be difficult, no matter how hard you try.

Use it to help you set your priorities.

What are your priorities? Often we get so sidetracked by distractions and what we think is important that we lose sight of our days. That’s when we feel like we’re not getting anything done or we don’t get a chance to complete our to-do lists to our satisfaction. Your Why can help you pinpoint your priorities and figure out what actually matters. What tasks do you need to tackle each day in order to get you closer to your goals and the life you want to lead? Let your Why be your guide to help you organize your day.

Make your Why part of the decisions you make.

Your Why helps you identify your priorities. When you know what they are, it’s easier to make decisions. What option aligns with or complements your Why? The one that most closely aligns is the one to choose. After all, it won’t force you to choose between what’s most important to you.

Stay motivated.

Your Why can help you stay motivated, especially when you’re feeling frustrated or distracted. When you’re feeling frustrated and ready to quit, your Why will help you focus on what you need to in order to stay true to the tasks you need to complete each day, including your Power Hour and following up with your network. Review your Why regularly – we prefer you do it daily, but it’s up to you – and ask yourself if you’re living up to it each day. Visualize your Why, if necessary, on those days when it feels especially difficult to keep going.
