How to Maintain Perspective on the Road to Network Marketing Success

Don’t you just love the story of the person who achieved network marketing success overnight? They encountered zero challenges along the way and people were falling all over themselves not only to buy from them but to also join their team. They went from zero to ridiculously rich in no time flat. Amazing, right? Too bad it’s a myth.

However, there are some days when it seems like every other network marketer out there is flying past you on the road to success as you’re sputtering in the slow lane. You’ve set lofty, but realistic goals, you’re doing your activities each and every day, you’re trying to connect with and add a targeted amount of people to Teamzy every week, but it still seems like you’re not getting where you want to be fast enough. What gives?

Things are not always what they seem

Let’s get one thing very clear – overnight success is a myth. Sure, it may seem like someone has defeated the odds and achieved instant success. However, if you look a bit closer, the reality is that a lot of work, setbacks, headaches, and heartache occurred on the road to that “instant” success. The thing is, we don’t see that. We don’t hear that part of the story because it doesn’t fit the soundbite that we want to hear. No one wants to hear about three straight months of zero sales and the huge setbacks it caused. Or the pressure the person was feeling to quit, either from that little voice in their heads telling them to just give up or from their spouse or loved ones. No one saw the daily hard work the person put in, tirelessly messaging people to build relationships and make new connections.

“If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time.” – Steve Jobs

You see, no one wants to hear about the work. And, it takes a lot of work to create a so-called overnight network marketing success. Everyone’s looking for the easy path to success, the one paved with gold, illuminated by the sunshine, and decorated with rainbows and butterflies. The real road to success is meandering with detours, steep hills, and perilous cliffs. Although the number of detours, hills, and cliffs may vary the reality is that no one has an easy time. However, the ones who do succeed decided early on that they’ll stay the course, no matter what.

“Lack of patience is the number one reason people lose as entrepreneurs.”  – Gary Vaynerchuk

Why network marketers quit

There are many reasons why people quit. Here are just a few of the reasons.

It’s hard

Work is hard. Life is hard at times, too. A lot of people don’t like “hard.” So many of us are looking for easy – Get rich quick! Lose 10 pounds in 5 minutes! Eliminate all wrinkles in one treatment! 12-pack abs in 2 minutes a day! You get the picture…

Why put in all the work when you can take the easy route instead?

The thing is there is no easy route to anywhere worth going, and that includes network marketing success. Sure, some people make it look easy, but they often don’t talk about all the work that went into it. They may not mention sorting orders well into the evening or feeling like they tapped their entire networks and couldn’t possibly expand. They don’t want to dwell on the negative aspects of their journey – who does, really?

“Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Don’t wish it were easier; wish you were better.”

– Jim Rohn

It takes time

Time is something we lament that we don’t have enough of these days. We’ve become accustomed to having everything in a hurry. Whereas 25 years ago, you’d call someone’s landline phone and leave a message on an answering machine if they weren’t home (or sometimes get a busy signal and have to try again), now communication is instant. You don’t even have to talk to someone; you can just send them a short text and they’ll get it instantly. Food and services are labeled as “fast” or “instant.”

As a result, we’ve become impatient. Like a two-year-old throwing an epic tantrum in a restaurant, when we want something, we want it NOW! NOW! NOW! And that includes success. We think that connecting with our networks every day for a week entitles us to massive network marketing success. If only that were true! Sure, you may get some response, but you’ve got to do it consistently every day for a period of time to build that trust and solidify your relationships.

“The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same.” – Colin R. Davis

We give up when we don’t see results

If something takes longer than expected, we give up. One of the most common health-related New Year’s resolutions people make is to lose 10 pounds. Most folks will hit the gym every day for a week and begin to eat healthier, too. They’ll turn down the donuts in the break room at work and snack on some almonds or a banana. Instead of sipping on a full-fat coffee drink, they’ll chug down glass after glass of water. Then, they’ll hit the scale at the end of the week, expecting to see a dramatic weight loss. “I gotta be down five pounds,” they think as they step on the scale. Their eyes bulge out of their heads when they see they’ve lost a pound or that the number hasn’t budged at all. They may curse and step off and back on the scale again, thinking there’s some mistake. The next week, they may grab a donut from the break room or hit the vending machine for a candy bar. Although they had the potential to lose weight, they didn’t give themselves enough time and they gave up before they truly started.

The same is true with network marketing. We expect that as soon as we start our businesses, people are going to be knocking down the door to buy from us. The reality is it takes time to build trust with those in our networks. Over time, as word spreads, new customers and prospects may flock to you; but first, you gotta put in the work.

3 Ways to Maintain Perspective

Understand your journey to network marketing success is yours alone

No two roads to success are the same. While one is full of speedbumps, another could be full of detours, and still, another could look clear from the outside, but be made of quicksand. You just never know. However, if you focus on your own road, you can face the challenges that arise and stay the course.

Don’t waste energy comparing yourself to others

Since we’re all on our own unique journeys, there’s no sense comparing yourself to others. Of course, if they’re doing something to grow their business or connect with clients that you’d like to try, by all means, give it a whirl. However, don’t compare your results with theirs. Instead, adapt it to your needs and your network.

Celebrate success!

When we reach milestones, we tend to rush past them without celebrating them first. Celebrating our successes keeps us on track and motivated to keep thriving! And don’t stop at just your network marketing success – celebrate the wins of others too. This not only helps you build your relationships, but it may also keep you motivated to continue on your journey to success as well.
